Streaming Giant Lands One of Cannes 2026’s Early Breakout Titles

In its first major acquisition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Netflix has secured global distribution rights outside France for the animated feature “In Waves,” a coming-of-age romance adapted from AJ Dungo’s acclaimed 2019 graphic memoir.

The deal marks one of the festival’s most competitive sales so far, highlighting continued demand for prestige animated storytelling in the global streaming market. Negotiations were handled by Anonymous Content, CAA Media Finance and Charades on behalf of the filmmakers.

Industry sources indicate the agreement landed in the mid-seven-figure range following multiple worldwide bids for the project.

‘In Waves’ Emerges as a Cannes Critics’ Week Standout

Directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, “In Waves” opened Cannes Critics’ Week to strong reviews and quickly became one of the most talked-about titles in the festival’s parallel sections.

The film features voice performances from Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu and BAFTA winner Will Sharpe.

Based on Dungo’s autobiographical graphic novel, the story is set in Los Angeles and centers on AJ, a reserved teenager passionate about skateboarding and art, and Kristen, an avid surfer with an adventurous spirit. The pair build a deep relationship while navigating young adulthood along Southern California’s surf culture.

Their lives are later disrupted when Kristen develops a sudden illness, forcing the couple to confront uncertainty together while leaning on friends, community and their shared connection to the ocean.

The film blends romance, grief and youth culture against the backdrop of California’s surf scene — a setting likely to resonate strongly with U.S. audiences familiar with West Coast lifestyle traditions and skate culture.

Acclaimed Creative Team Behind the Film

“In Waves” was written by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux. The film was produced by Priscilla Bertin and Judith Nora for Silex Films.

France-based Diaphana will distribute the movie domestically, while Charades is overseeing international sales.

Executive producers include David Levine and Nick Shumaker for Anonymous Content, alongside Yohann Comte, Carole Baraton, Pierre Mazars, Sharpe and Hsu.

Producers Praise Netflix Partnership

David Levine and Nick Shumaker said the team recognized Nguyen’s talent early in development and believed the emotional core of AJ’s story would connect with audiences worldwide.

“This exciting partnership with Netflix will ensure that our romantic, coming-of-age story reaches people all over the world,” the producers said in a joint statement.

Producer Priscilla Bertin also welcomed the streaming deal, calling Netflix’s support an opportunity to bring the film to the broadest possible audience.

Animated Features Continue Gaining Momentum

Netflix’s acquisition reflects the growing international market for animated films aimed at adult and crossover audiences rather than traditional family demographics. In recent years, streaming platforms and major studios have increasingly invested in emotionally driven animated storytelling, particularly projects tied to established graphic novels and independent festival buzz.

With its emotional narrative, California setting and acclaimed source material, “In Waves” appears positioned to become one of the standout animated releases emerging from Cannes this year.

As competition among streamers intensifies for prestige festival titles, Netflix’s early Cannes purchase signals continued confidence in auteur-driven animation with global appeal.
