Google is bringing the AI coding boom directly to Android development with a major expansion of its web-based Google AI Studio platform. Announced Tuesday during the opening keynote of Google I/O 2026, the new tools allow users to create Android apps in minutes using artificial intelligence, significantly reducing the time traditionally required for setup and coding.

The move reflects Google’s broader push to integrate AI across its ecosystem, from Search and Workspace to Android and developer tools, while also increasing competition with a growing field of AI-assisted coding platforms.

The announcement places Google in direct competition with AI coding tools including Cursor, Replit, Lovable, and Anthropic’s Claude Code, all of which have gained popularity as developers increasingly adopt AI-assisted programming workflows.

Unlike traditional Android development, which often requires downloading software environments and configuring multiple tools, Google’s new process is designed to happen almost entirely within the browser.

For now, Google says these apps are intended mainly for personal use, though broader sharing capabilities are planned for future updates.

The company suggested several use cases for the technology, including:

  • Personal productivity tools
  • Lightweight social networking apps
  • Hardware-connected experiences
  • AI-powered utility apps

Users who want to continue developing their projects can move them into Android Studio by downloading project files or exporting directly to GitHub.

Google also said AI Studio can automatically generate app listings, package app bundles, and upload projects to internal testing tracks in the Google Play Console. This allows creators to test updates on devices while continuing development.

Public App Sharing Features Are Still Coming

Although public publishing is not fully available yet, Google confirmed that support for sharing apps with friends and family is on its roadmap.

Alongside app creation tools, Google announced new AI-powered discovery features for Android users.

A new feature called “Ask Play” will introduce conversational AI directly inside the Google Play Store, allowing users to search for apps using natural language questions instead of traditional keyword searches.

Google also confirmed that Gemini AI will soon begin surfacing Android apps directly within conversations on both Android devices and the web. That rollout is expected in the coming weeks.

Later this year, Gemini will also support recommendations for more than 450,000 movies and TV shows, along with livestream sports content. In some cases, users will be able to jump directly from Gemini responses into Android apps connected to that content.
