Report: Yoel Romero leaves UFC leaving three fights on his contract

Former middleweight title competitor Yoel Romero split from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), according to a report by Ariel Halawani of ESPN.

According to sources, Romero fought three fights in his UFC contract.

Romero, 43, emerges from a faint loss in his decision to current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 248 last March. “Soldier of God” has now lost his last three appearances in the Octagon dating back to June 2018 when he lost to Robert Whitaker for the interim title.

Despite not being able to get UFC gold in multiple shots, Romero would still come down as one of the most physically gifted fighters to advance inside the Octagon. He would leave behind a 9-4 UFC record with notable endings on former champions Luke Rockhold, Lyoto Machida and Chris Weidman.

Romero’s manager, Kawa owners, told ESPN: “While we didn’t expect Romero’s time in UFC to end this way, we’re grateful for the opportunities. [UFC president] Dana White [general counsel] Hunter Campbell W. [matchmaker] Mick Maynard has given it away over the years. He is ready to go ahead now and resume his career, and we are already talking to other promotions while we do.

As of now, Romero is a free agent and can go anywhere he pleases. While it would be fun to see a “Lord Soldier” competing in something outside of the box like nude boxing, Romero might listen to teammate Jorge Masvidal and take a shot of Jake Paul in the ring.
