2020 Workday Charity Open leaderboard breakdown: Round 2 suspended with Collin Morikawa remaining in front

Round 2 of the 2020 Workday Charity Open was suspended on Friday at 8:50 p.m. ET, but everything that needed to be seen was seen earlier in the day as Collin Morikawa backed up his 65 with a 66 to take a big lead into the weekend.

Morikawa was brilliant early as two different weather delays pushed back play into deep in the evening as two dozen golfers were still on the course and will pick their rounds back up on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. When they do, they’ll all be chasing Morikawa, who is at 13 under after 36 holes of play. Let’s take a closer look at his round and those chasing him as we head for the weekend.

1. Collin Morikawa (-13) — Listen, this thing is over. It’s a wrap. Morikawa is definitely a star — maybe even a superstar — and he just recorded the lowest score on Thursday and the second-lowest on Friday at Muirfield Village. He’s putting the lights out, and though that will regress, the ball-striking won’t. It will take two more rounds to make it official, but Morikawa will win the 2020 Workday Charity Open for the second victory of his career and his star will take off for the next several years (Remind me of all of this when Zach Johnson beats him by two on Sunday evening).

T2. Justin Thomas, Kevin Streelman (-10) — Thomas’ goal late in the day was surely to get into the final pairing with Morikawa on Saturday (that would have been an absolute ball-striking extravaganza), but he fell one short of that happening as Streelman got in the house ahead of him. Still, Thomas was brilliant as he’s played 36 holes of bogey-free golf and is seventh in the field from tee to green. A Morikawa-Thomas shootout over the weekend would be an absolute delight.

T4. Sam Burns, Hideki Matsuyama (-9) — Speaking of few blemishes, Matsuyama has just one on his card all week. Unfortunately for him, it was a double bogey in Round 1 that’s keeping him from playing in that final pairing with Morikawa. Man, Morikawa, Matsuyama and Thomas is a trio of maybe three of the five best iron players in the world.

T6. Viktor Hovland, Rory Sabbatini (-8) — How good was this drive from Hovland on the par-4 14th for eagle? I mean, this is ludicrous and he makes it look so easy. Hovland has shot 63 on the front nine on the course and 73 on the back nine. Keep that in mind come Saturday.

T8. Ian Poulter, Chase Seiffert (-7) and T10. Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar, Nick Taylor, Louis Oosthuizen, Richy Werenski (-6) — It’s unusual for Reed to be top 10 from tee to green and yet so far off the lead. His short game hasn’t been Reed-like thus far, though, as he’s close to 100th in putting and fairly mediocre (for him) around the greens as well. This is actually good news if you’re looking for Reed to make some noise this weekend because the short game will bounce back and he might open Saturday like he closed Friday (with a 32 on the front nine on the course).

T29. Rickie Fowler (-3) — Nice day for Fowler on Friday as he was 3 under and secured his second straight made cut. His putter (like Mickelson’s below) has been pretty mediocre for him, which is actually a good thing because it means his ball-striking is coming around. When I watched him in Round 2, there were a few swings he made that resulted in truly horrific approaches, but overall the swing tweaks seem to have clicked a bit. It’ll take more than two events to determine this, but maybe Fowler is on an upward trajectory for the rest of 2020.

T45. Phil Mickelson (-2) — Mickelson’s putting has been unbelievable this week, and not in a good way. He’s made just 88 feet of putts so far and just three putts over 6 feet through his first 36 holes. The frustrating part for him has to be that he’s striking it really well and not scoring at all. He won’t win, but he can definitely top 10 this weekend if the putter bounces back.
