In a low-scoring and faultless relationship marred by more injuries for two teams they’ve already hit, the 49 Eagles lead 8-7 at the end of the first half. Things slowly started, with Carson Wentz armed his first throw to the ground and later intercepting Philly’s second engine for the game. He eventually found something of a rhythm with broad receiver Greg Ward, but Wentz did most of his damage in the first half with his legs, darting three times for 24 yards and a point, after which the Eagles added a two-point diversion. Miles Sanders struggled not to be tracked, but that’s somewhat understandable as three offensive line men were pushed back to start the match and the Pro Bowl tackles Lyn Johnson early on as well.
On the other side of the ball, Nick Mullins found an affair with George Keitel (6 of 6 for 89 yards) but struggled to complete passes for everyone else (3 of 8 for 30 yards and intercept). He also made a poor decision to assign the Niners a chance to score goals that would have given them the top spot. For the most part, he was asked to simply place the ball in the hands of Kittle and Deebo Samuel (for touch, pass and run, for a total of 27 yards) and Brandon Ayuk. The Apprentice took a smoke barrier from Mullins’ 38 yards into the house, breaking several tackles and blocking a defender along the way. (The play was judged to be running because the pass slipped.)
