The state of Wichita is conducting an internal investigation into the behavior of basketball coach Greg Marshall, sources confirmed to CBS Sports on Thursday. The scope of the investigation is extensive but focuses primarily on how he handled his players, with the alleged physical abuse among the many disturbing accounts included in the report.
“I know the university did interviews and was fully involved in the process,” Marshall told The Athletic. “I look forward to closing it as I continue to focus my energy on our team.”
Among the allegations in the report, former player Chuck Morris pushed in the back. His treatment of individuals in and around the program has also raised alarms, according to the report, and his behavior in court has caused him problems in the past as well.
The investigation comes on the heels of a mass exodus of the Marshall Wichita State Program earlier this spring, in which seven players, six of whom were on scholarships, were transferred from the program. Wichita also lost a commitment from prospective 2020 Jadon Michael in late March.
Marshall is the winning coach in Wichita history with a record number of 331-121. He was hired in 2007 from Winthrop and has appeared in seven NCAA matches since then, with the unforgettable 2013–14 season as the program earned the number # 1 and finished the year 35-1. The year before, the Shockers had gone 30-9 and advanced to their Final Four appearances in nearly 50 years before falling to eventual national champion Louisville.
Marshall was successful even amid the in-show transition as he jumped from the Missouri Valley convention to the American Athletic Conference in 2017. Wichita did not finish in the lower half of the regular season AAC race and finished in a draw in the second three seasons before. The Shockers went 23-8 last season.
