Jose Mourinho’s side faces the prospect of up to six matches in 15 days if they win the Carabao Cup and the European League.

Tottenham faces a range of potential matches in September with up to nine matches in 24 days if advancing in the European League.
Tottenham will enter the second qualifying round of the European League on Thursday 17 September against Lokomotiv Plovdiv, after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season. They would have advanced directly to the group stage had Arsenal not defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup Final.
As the 2020/21 season shrank due to the damaging impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the European qualifiers have been reduced to one-man matches.
Even so, however, if Tottenham progress to the last two rounds of the Europa League qualifiers, they face the prospect of playing two matches in the same midweek, two consecutive weeks, except for a re-arrangement in the already full match schedule.
The Premier League has already acknowledged that some of the first-round matches may need to be re-arranged as the opening set of matches are scheduled to take place on Saturday 5 September, which coincides with the first international weekend of the season.

The clubs participating in the European competition will enter the Carabao Cup next season in the third round as usual, with the arrival of Tuesday 22 September and Wednesday 23 September for these matches.
On paper, Tottenham will then face a qualifying match from the third round of the European League on Thursday (September 24th).
If Tottenham manages to pass both games, they will face exactly the same predicament the following week, with the fourth round of the Carabao Cup scheduled for Tuesday 29 September and Wednesday 30 September. The European League qualifying round is scheduled for Thursday, October 1.
When did this happen before?
Aston Villa defeated young Liverpool team 5-0 at Villa Park in December, causing their first domestic defeat of the 2019/20 season.
There have been several occasions – although not surprisingly, it is not common. A crowd of matches last season led to Liverpool knocking out the youth team – led by then-U23 coach Neil Critchley – in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they lost 5–0 on the night.
Their first overseas team was at the time in Qatar, before facing Monterrey in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals the following evening.
Moreover, in November 2001 Arsenal and Manchester United met in the League Cup after just 24 hours of playing the Premier League matches against Charlton and Liverpool respectively. While both teams played stronger teams in league matches – and still lost – Arsenal emerged victorious from a one-sided Cup match, crushing their arch-rivals 4-0.
And in 1999/00, United controversially withdrew from the FA Cup after only months of lifting the trophy as part of their triple season, so they could participate in the Club World Cup, which was being held in Brazil.
