SpaceX Falcon 9 Launches 27 Starlink Satellites From California, Booster Lands at Sea
SpaceX launched another 27 Starlink internet satellites into low Earth orbit on September 6, continuing the rapid expansion of its broadband constellation. The mission also marked the 103rd Falcon 9 launch of 2026 and featured another successful recovery of the rocket’s reusable first-stage booster.
Falcon 9 Lifts Off From Vandenberg Space Force Base
The Falcon 9 launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 7:26 a.m. local time, or 10:26 a.m. EDT.
The rocket climbed through unusually clear morning skies along California’s Central Coast, an area where coastal fog frequently affects visibility.
After liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first and second stages separated as planned. The upper stage continued toward low Earth orbit carrying the 27 Starlink satellites, while the first-stage booster began its return to Earth.
SpaceX Booster Completes 19th Flight
About 8.5 minutes after launch, the Falcon 9 first stage successfully landed on SpaceX’s drone ship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific Ocean.
The booster used for the mission, designated B1088, was completing its 19th flight.
That puts the rocket at roughly half the current SpaceX reuse record. Booster B1067 reached 37 flights during a Starlink mission on August 25.
B1088 has supported a range of previous missions, including NROL-126, Transporter-12, NASA’s SPHEREx mission, NROL-57 and 13 earlier Starlink flights.
27 Starlink Satellites Deployed Into Orbit
While the booster returned to the Pacific, Falcon 9’s upper stage continued carrying the Starlink spacecraft toward their deployment orbit.
All 27 satellites were released as scheduled approximately 62 minutes after liftoff.
The mission was SpaceX’s 103rd Falcon 9 flight of 2026. Of those launches, 80 have been dedicated to expanding Starlink, underscoring how heavily the company’s launch schedule is now focused on its satellite internet network.
Starlink has grown into the world’s largest satellite constellation. According to astronomer and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell, more than 11,000 active Starlink spacecraft are currently in orbit.
California Becomes Key Base for Starlink Missions
SpaceX currently conducts its Starlink missions exclusively from Vandenberg Space Force Base.
The company previously launched Starlink satellites from Florida as well, but those missions have recently been placed on hold as SpaceX prepares for a larger role for its Starship launch system on the Space Coast.
The shift makes Vandenberg increasingly important to the current generation of Starlink deployments while SpaceX works toward transitioning future missions to Starship.
Starship Expected to Launch Larger Starlink V3 Satellites
SpaceX plans to use Starship for its next generation of Starlink satellites, known as Starlink V3.
The V3 spacecraft are expected to be larger and more capable than the current V2 satellites, making Starship’s substantially greater payload capacity important to future deployment plans.
Elon Musk has said the company ultimately wants to build a network containing about 100,000 Starlink V3 satellites in low Earth orbit.
Such an expansion would represent a dramatic increase from the already more than 11,000 active Starlink spacecraft currently operating around Earth.
Falcon 9 Reusability Remains Central to SpaceX Launch Pace
The September 6 mission also highlighted the role reusable rockets continue to play in SpaceX’s high launch frequency.
Landing B1088 after its 19th mission allows the company to potentially refurbish and fly the booster again instead of manufacturing a new first stage for every launch. SpaceX has progressively increased the number of missions individual Falcon 9 boosters can perform, with its current record standing at 37 flights.
With 103 Falcon 9 launches completed in 2026 and 80 dedicated to Starlink, SpaceX continues to rely heavily on its workhorse rocket while preparing Starship to take over a larger share of next-generation satellite deployments.
The successful launch of 27 additional satellites and recovery of B1088 further expanded the Starlink network while demonstrating the reusable Falcon 9 system’s continuing role in SpaceX’s orbital operations.
