Moody’s Warns Massive AI Spending Could Weaken Credit Profiles of Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, and Other Tech Giants
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is reshaping the financial outlook for some of the world’s largest technology companies. According to a new report from Moody’s Ratings, the unprecedented scale of AI investment is putting pressure on cash flow, increasing debt obligations, and creating new risks for the balance sheets of major U.S. tech firms—even as demand for AI services continues to grow.
AI Infrastructure Boom Is Driving Historic Capital Spending
Moody’s Ratings said the race to build AI infrastructure is forcing major cloud providers, often referred to as hyperscalers, to spend at levels never seen before.
The ratings agency said companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle, and CoreWeave are shifting away from the asset-light business models that historically fueled Silicon Valley’s growth. Instead, they are investing heavily in physical infrastructure such as data centers, servers, and advanced AI chips.
In a research note released this week, Moody’s said the transition requires “unprecedented levels of investment and capital raising.”
Previously, software-focused businesses relied on intellectual property, cloud services, and scalable platforms that required relatively modest capital expenditures. Generative AI, however, demands enormous computing power, resulting in significant investments in data centers and specialized hardware.
Capital Expenditures Expected to Reach $1 Trillion
Moody’s projects that capital expenditures across the sector will total approximately $785 billion in 2026, with spending expected to climb to roughly $1 trillion in 2027.
The report says this surge in spending is reducing free cash flow across the industry while increasing financial obligations as companies race to secure AI leadership.
Debt, Equity Sales, and Leasing Are Funding AI Expansion
To finance these ambitious projects, technology companies are increasingly relying on a mix of debt financing, equity offerings, and long-term lease agreements.
According to Moody’s, direct debt among the six companies it tracks has climbed to approximately $460 billion.
The report also highlighted recent fundraising efforts, including Alphabet’s announcement last month of an $85 billion equity sale, as companies seek additional capital to support AI-related investments.
Long-Term Data Center Leases Add Hidden Financial Obligations
Rather than placing all borrowing directly on their balance sheets, many hyperscalers are turning to long-term leases for new AI data centers.
Moody’s estimates that lease commitments across the group have expanded to approximately $1.2 trillion, with more than $820 billion tied to facilities that have not yet entered service because construction is still underway.
Although these lease obligations are not recorded as traditional debt, Moody’s considers them debt-equivalent liabilities because they commit companies to substantial future rental payments over many years.
Credit Ratings Remain Strong for the Largest Tech Companies
Despite its warning, Moody’s emphasized that several of the industry’s biggest players continue to maintain exceptionally strong financial positions.
Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta still possess some of the strongest corporate balance sheets globally, making immediate downgrades to their investment-grade credit ratings unlikely.
However, Moody’s identified greater near-term pressure for companies with weaker credit profiles.
Oracle and CoreWeave Face Greater Financial Pressure
Among the companies covered in the report, Oracle and AI cloud provider CoreWeave appear more vulnerable.
Oracle currently holds a Baa2 credit rating with a negative outlook, placing it only two levels above speculative, or “junk,” status.
CoreWeave, meanwhile, carries a Ba3 rating in the high-yield category and relies heavily on complex private financing arrangements to build and maintain its GPU-powered AI infrastructure.
Moody’s Highlights Growing Risks in the AI Ecosystem
The report also points to what Moody’s describes as a growing “circular” structure within the AI industry.
Major technology companies have invested billions of dollars in leading AI developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Those same AI companies then spend heavily on cloud computing services provided by the hyperscalers that invested in them.
According to Moody’s, these interconnected relationships increase concentration risk because many of the industry’s largest companies increasingly depend on the same customers and similar expectations for future AI demand.
Strong AI Demand Continues to Support the Industry
Despite rising financial commitments, Moody’s noted that several factors continue to support the industry’s overall credit quality.
Demand for AI computing remains strong, cloud businesses continue to expand, and hyperscalers have secured hundreds of billions of dollars in long-term customer contracts that provide predictable future revenue.
Those strengths help offset the growing financial burden associated with building AI infrastructure, even as spending reaches historic levels.
Investors Will Be Watching Returns on AI Investments
Moody’s said the technology sector is undergoing one of its most significant financial transformations since the rise of cloud computing.
Rather than focusing solely on revenue growth, investors are expected to increasingly evaluate whether companies can generate sufficient returns from the enormous sums being invested in AI infrastructure.
As spending accelerates across the industry, Moody’s said future performance will depend not only on maintaining AI demand but also on delivering returns that justify the historic level of capital being deployed.
