The 2020 US Open, the first of six major tournaments in the 2020-21 golf season, kicks off Thursday at the historic Winged Foot Golf Club with nearly a number of player-like events. The course will take center stage, as it often does at the US Open, and this course deserves all the credit as players have been talking throughout the week about how pure (but tough) the play is. Only one golfer has ever finished Winged Foot Week, and I don’t expect it to make the second 2020. What it will save is the top of the field that’s as good and deep as ever.
Dustin Johnson leads the way as the favorite on 2/17 (according to William Hill Sportsbook) as he tries to claim his second major win and third win in his last four matches. The only golfer to have defeated him during that period, John Ram, is next 10-1. Elsewhere, Justin Thomas will try to add to his set of wins, Colin Morikawa will try to get a second major championship in a row, Rory McIlroy will try to become the 20th golfer with five or more, and Tiger Woods will try to become the second player to 16., and he will try Phil Mickelson once again complete the slam. The first round has to be tumultuous on Winged Foot ground as the best in the game (and some of the best of all time) try to beat one of the gorgeous golf courses on the planet.
