Romandie race opener – Hayter wins introduction in Lausanne – Schmid in the top ten – sport


Ethan Hayter wins the introduction to the Tour de Romandie in Lausanne. Mauro Schmid is the best Swiss in ninth place.

Ethan Hayter (Inios Grenadiers) knocked out former GP World Champion Rohan Dennis from Australia (Jumbo-Visma) by 4 seconds at the start of the 75th round of the Tour Romani at the 5.12km race in Lausanne. Austrian Felix Groschartner (Bora Hansgrohe) finished third, losing 10 seconds to the 23-year-old Briton. Last year’s winner Geirant Thomas, teammate and compatriot Hayter finished fourth.

For Hayter, who has already won two world titles on the track, this is his first World Tour win in his third year as a professional. In the 2021 World Cup, he finished eighth in the time test.

Schmid is convinced

Mauro Schmid was the best of the 15 Swiss who started the Jubilee Tour in western Switzerland. The 22-year-old from Team Quick-Step finished ninth by 14 seconds.

Mark Hershey (UAE Team Emirates) finished 46th after 24 seconds. Gino Medder (victor of Bahrain), the biggest Swiss trump in the general classification, crossed the finish line in 57th place (27 seconds back).

Wednesday’s first stage leads over 178 km from Saint-Aubin-Sauges on Lake Neuch√Ętel to Romont FR. On the hill road, riders have to master 4 climbs. The Anniversary Tour ends on Sunday with a mountain time experience of over 15.8 kilometers from Eagle to Villars.
