Immigration : An Immigration Lawyer & Negotiator Comments on SB 1070 - The Enemy Within
on 2010/7/12 11:20:00 (104 reads)
Immigration

(Prudent Press Agency) --- It took some time, but I have to state I am glad the federal government finally filed a suit challenging Arizona SB 1070. In reading through the federal complaint it becomes clear that Arizona is not equipped to handle immigration. Moreover, the way SB 1070 is worded, it will create a lot of confusion and issues of interpretation. The severity of the wording will force many people to spend time in jail while their immigration status is being resolved. Racism will develop where it wasn't before, and worse yet, America will hurt.

This great country of ours, as young as it is, has had many great burdens to bear. The recent years have been especially tough on the country and its citizens, who are disliked in many parts of the world before they open their mouths, simply for being American. Well, in my humble opinion, this country of ours, that is making such an effort to be a melting pot of the world has just been dealt the biggest blow imaginable, and it was Arizona, "the enemy within", so to speak. People who don't understand English across the globe only get the gist of what went on in Arizona. As someone well traveled, let me assure you that the misunderstandings that have rippled globally have done irreparable damage to the integrity of what America stands for and once again, we are feared and disliked, rather than loved and respected, which we should be. As a country, we are embarking on one of the toughest global challenges we could take on- integration of global populations. We have no one's shoulders to stand on, we are learning as we go along and doing our best. This should be respected because even as an immigration lawyer who is in private practice and not working for the federal government, I understand how large and multi-faceted the challenge is. Short of war, I cannot imagine something more layered and complex to resolve than immigration policy.

Immigration : Arizona Immigrant Teachers’ Face Unfair Discrimination: Fluency and Accents
on 2010/5/4 9:00:00 (245 reads)
Immigration

(Prudent Press Agency)--- An article in the Wall Street Journal by Miriam Jordan reports that veteran teachers in Arizona who speak with an accent will be removed from classes for students who are learning English. They will be offered classes or other steps to improve . It will be left to individual districts to decide the fate of teachers who do not meet the requirements; however, they should not be allowed to continue to work in classes for non-native English speakers.

The percentage of children in this category who are non-native speakers are comprised as follows: 46% Kindergarten-2nd grade, 24% 3rd-5th, 16% 6th-8th, and 14% 9th-12th. “ Approximately 150,000 of Arizona’s 1.2 million public school students are classified as English Language Learners. Of the state’s 247 school districts, about 20 have high concentrations of students who are learning English and concentrated in the younger grades.

Arizona State Department of Education is telling school districts that “teachers whose spoken English deems to be heavily accented or ungrammatical must be removed from classes for students still learning English.”

Immigration : Arizona Immigration Law heading for controversy
on 2010/4/26 23:00:00 (195 reads)
Immigration

(Prudent Press Agency)--- ARIZONA IMMIGRATION law is heading for big controversy, it is creating rift amongst the party members. Several peoples from all walks of life are attacking the immigration enforcement law. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, who is democrat, openly vowed to take their fight to courts in coming week.

On Sunday, Gordon joined with federal lawmakers, including Raul Grijalva, D Ariz and 3,500 protesters at Arizona Capitol. Gordon attacked the Republican Governer Jan Brewer immigration law as a “racist and unjust”. He will seek City Councils approval to file a lawsuit against the state to block the measure.

“This is dividing our city and our state, it's tearing us apart,” said Gordon. In New York, civil right activist Al Sharpton and Lillian Rodriguez Lopez, president of Hiaspanic Federation, announced they would go to federal court this week to challenge the law, which Sharpton said effectively “sanctions” racial profiling.

Immigration

(Prudent Press Agency)---DENVER, CO A new documentary produced by a Denver nonprofit offers a provocative look at immigration awareness and reform by focusing on the nations largest illegal immigration raid on Dec. 12, 2006. That day, over 1,200 people were arrested following raids at six Swift and Co. processing plants across the United States. Immigration : Canada's Government Continues Consultations on Immigration Priorities With National Stakeholders
on 2008/8/16 0:50:00 (385 reads)
Immigration

(Prudent Press Agency)---OTTAWA, ONTARIO-- The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, met today with national stakeholders from business, industry, labour and non-governmental organizations to discuss occupational priorities for immigration purposes.

This national round table was an opportunity to hear from key experts from a national perspective. It was an important element of cross-Canada consultation sessions with provinces, territories and stakeholders, including ethnic and immigrant-serving organizations, over the past month.

Today's consultations focused on identifying critical occupational shortages in trades and professions across Canada, the role of immigration in responding to them, and any barriers to foreign credential accreditation. This information will help develop instructions for immigration officers on occupations that are identified for priority processing. The ministerial instructions, to be issued this fall, will focus on applications in the federal skilled worker category.

Immigration : The Californios, Americas First Spanish Immigrants
on 2008/6/21 7:40:00 (552 reads)
Immigration

(Prudent Press Agency)-- Today, the number of Spanish speaking people in the United States is increasing. The reaction to this varies from tolerance to open hostility. Many fail to realize that for a large portion of the country, the Spanish came first.

Usually when we think of Europeans settling North America, or as some might say conquering North America, we automatically think of the westward expansion. We think about the original thirteen colonies revolting against England and forming the United States. We think of the pioneers crossing the prairies in covered wagons. We think of the Wild West. All of these are a part of American history. Yet at the same time that settlers were moving from the east coast inland, others were settling the west coast. Most of these spoke Spanish.
