Teens and Young Adults : Texting, Teens and Car Accidents
on 2010/7/23 9:00:00 (159 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency) --- According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 350,000 teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 were treated in emergency departments for injuries resulting from automobile accidents. In fact, data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), published in a recent thesis at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, noted that for the nine years spanning 1995 to 2004 crashes involving 15- to 17-year-old drivers claimed the lives of 30,917 people. Many factors play a role in this disproportionate number of teen accidents, including inexperience and the use of distracting technology.

Little Experience, Overconfidence
Young drivers lack experience. In a PBS interview, David Strayer, an expert on distracted driving, explained that teen drivers first learning how to drive do not have the skills of more experienced drivers; thus, teens are not accustomed to handling the many routine tasks drivers face every day. Based on the research cited in the Virginia Polytech thesis, novice drivers fixate on middle, faraway portions of the roadway, whereas experienced drivers tend to glance in many different directions and fixate less. Experienced drivers are also more aware of potential danger zones.

Teens and Young Adults : New Skatepark in Watts, California Prepares for Grand Opening
on 2010/7/16 12:20:00 (311 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency) --- In 2006, Spohn Ranch Skateparks of Industry, California began working with the Watts Labor Community Action Committee on a project that would provide the youth of Watts, California with a skateboarding safe haven. The WLCAC’s dedication to improving quality of life in their neighborhood inspired Spohn Ranch to create a unique environment that would accommodate the increasing popularity of skateboarding and action sports in the greater Los Angeles area. In 2010, when funding and an appropriate location finally became available, Spohn Ranch was proud to turn skatepark dreams into reality.

With 4,500 square feet of skateable terrain, this pocket park will promote healthy lifestyles and present the youth of Watts with a positive alternative to the crime, gangs and drugs that challenge their community. For this project, Spohn Ranch worked with Maine-based Who Skates to transform an under-utilized loading zone into a vibrant community skate spot. The park balances street and transition features in a unique way, while simultaneously providing opportunities for skateboarders of varying ability levels. With a historical mural as a backdrop, this skatepark is well on its way to becoming one of Watts’ most inspiring displays of community activism.

Teens and Young Adults : Driving at Night or DUI: Which Poses the Worst Danger for Teen Drivers?
on 2010/6/12 8:00:00 (112 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency) --- Parents are programmed to worry about it. Insurance company actuaries build it into policy rates. Communities large and small mourn incomprehensible losses every year. Everyone knows that teen drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents, and statistics have long shown that motor vehicle accidents are the primary cause of death among young people. But how do the various dangers that escalate teen accident rates compare? Surprisingly, a recent study reveals that nighttime driving is the foremost risk factor faced by teenage drivers nationwide - eclipsing even drinking, speeding and failure to wear seatbelts.

The full story is told in a decade of national data analyzed by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) at Texas A&M University, one of the foremost transportation research organizations in the United States. Even absent the potent risk of drinking, teens driving at night face enhanced dangers because of inexperience, insufficient sleep, and their easy susceptibility to distractions. Overconfident texting and phone use while driving is increasingly common among the latest generation of new drivers. "Whenever you combine the nighttime danger and the cell phone danger with inexperience, you have created a perfect storm," explained Bernie Fette, a TTI research analyst and one author of the recent study.

Teens and Young Adults : Parental Liability for Teen Drivers
on 2010/6/10 19:50:00 (68 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency) --- Receiving a driver's license is a rite of passage for American teens. Driving not only allows a teen a new found freedom but also brings additional responsibility. However, the teen driver is not the only one assuming responsibility when he or she takes the wheel; so are parents or guardians. A recent accident indicates the potential liability that a parent may face. The accident, which killed the 16 year old passenger, occurred when the teen driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a railroad crossing at high speed. At the time of the accident the teen driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.165, more than twice the legal limit for adults. In Florida, the parents of the teen driver may be held liable for the damage caused in this accident.

Florida Law

Under Florida law, a parent can be held legally responsible for the negligent actions of this or her teen driver. Florida law requires that a parent or guardian sign the driver's license of a person under the age of 18. By doing so, the law holds the person signing the license liable for any negligent or willful misconduct of the young driver.

“Companies complain to us that the youth of today are not prepared, ready or even truly willing to work,” says Renee Ward, founder of Teens4Hire.org, a web site devoted to helping teens land jobs. “They say teens lack the right attitude, skills and work ethic which makes the company reluctant to hire a teenager especially a minor teen.”

Teens and Young Adults : Knee Replacement for Young People
on 2010/5/22 20:40:00 (216 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Play high school sports, or just at having some fun with your friends? Young people suffer knee joint injuries just as older individuals - injuries that may sideline sports careers, mobility, and range of motion. Older individuals aren't the only ones who experience pain, loss of mobility, or a more sedentary lifestyle due to a knee injury. More younger men and women are experiencing joint pain, lack of mobility and frozen knees caused by end-stage arthritis, osteoporosis, and other medical conditions that typically afflict older individuals.

One of the newest technologies in total knee replacement is called the Oxinium knee replacement joint. Unfortunately, the procedure in the United States is staggering, often ranging between $65,000 and $75,000. Most parents can't afford that kind of surgery for their teens, but in India, such procedures restore mobility and flexibility for about $12,000.

Oxinium Knee Replacement
In the past, orthopedic surgeons have been reluctant to offer young men and women knee joint replacement surgical options because their activity levels are naturally higher than older patients, and most conventional knee implants typically last only last between 10 and 15 years. Some Oxinium knee implants on the other hand could last for 30 - 35 years and have been cleared by the FDA. Read on.

Teens and Young Adults : World Progress Report with Joan Lunden Focuses on Troubled Teens
on 2010/5/14 7:20:00 (130 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency)--- It’s becoming a common trend in today’s society. More and more girls are being stripped of their youth. Instead of worrying about what college to attend and what career path to study, teenage girls are entering motherhood.

According to Family First Aid, an organization that helps troubled teens, “Thirty-four percent of young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20 -- about 820,000 a year. Eight in ten of these teen pregnancies are unintended and 79 percent are to unmarried teens.” As a result, most teen moms drop out of high school in order to take care of their child. Consequently, very few ever receive their high school diploma and only 1.5 percent earn a college degree by the age of 30. Studies also show that most single teen mothers end up on welfare and that their children are more susceptible to child abuse and neglect.

Despite these heartbreaking statistics, there is hope. Numerous organizations around the country have focused their efforts on the needs of these young moms offering support, grants and housing. Still, in order to make a change for future generations, more emphasis needs to be placed on preventative measures. As such, the Public Television series, World Progress Report, would like to highlight organizations that are positively impacting the youth of America. “We recognize the value of influencing teens to not only make better decisions, but the right decisions. Teens should enjoy their adolescence, not allow it to be cut short due to a poor choice. That’s why awareness regarding important topics like these need to be brought to light. We hope that through the stories covered on the World Progress Report, people can walk away more informed,” said the Executive Producer of the series.

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Melanoma is the second leading cause of cancer death for people age 15 to 30, and the rate is increasing. Now, the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is reaching out to teens about tanning and its link to the deadliest type of skin cancer.

Launched as part of Melanoma Awareness Month, the “Take a Stand, Don’t Tan!” campaign provides teens with the facts about the health risks associated with tanning. The campaign uses Facebook, YouTube and other online tools, including the “Take a Stand, Don’t Tan!” pledge.

“This isn’t a cancer that waits for people to grow old before it strikes and teens need to understand the health risks before they get in a tanning bed,” said Tim Turnham, executive director of the MRF. “Melanoma is the second most common type of cancer in teens and young adults and the leading cause of cancer death in women 25 to 30 years old.“

Teens and Young Adults : The Role Of The Community In Preventing Youth Crime
on 2010/5/3 16:20:00 (120 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency)--- In recent years crime rate has been increased in double and most of the violent events are committed by youths than the adult offender. Nowadays juvenile violent behaviors became one of the global issues and tough measures initiated in national level all over the world like increasing the range of penalty for the youth who committed violent activity, strict procedures for school safety and so on. The traditional alternatives for this problem are separate unit of police department to target school areas and youth groups wherever youngsters get together, very strict ruling and judgments and finally high penalties 1.

Many researchers and psychologists working to identify the root cause of the juvenile violent behavior but they not able to provide definite causes for this fact. Public health researchers and social welfare units continues the analysis to identify the environment and agents of the youth violence. This analysis resulted about what kind of people involving in these violent activities, at what environment and at what time. And these type of results very helpful to elaborate the search of solution for the youth crime act. Hence it is a public health issue which should not be a puzzle to prevent it 1.

The role of communities in the youth environment is very important. Their relationship with the fellowmen in their community impacts the activities, aspirations and interests of young people. The influence of community has a power to change the mind and behavior of youths. The main factor is community can create opportunities for a youngster to take leadership and it will prevent the disengagement. Youths get a better platform to actively involve in local services. It is responsible of the communities to make them realize the importance of their contribution in the particular community and their participation in social activities.

Teens and Young Adults : Marketing to the Adolescent's Desire for Misery
on 2010/4/30 18:20:00 (128 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Here's an answer to an age-old parental question that may also have business implications: Why are adolescents miserable so much of the time?

In many cases, it's because they want to be miserable.
Not most adolescents, and not most of the time. But a sizable number of people ages 14 to 18 appear to want to be in bad moods now and then. This self-imposed angst may boost their development, according to a team of researchers. They suggest that repudiating convention — such as the convention of being (or seeming) happy — may help adolescents to "seek emotional autonomy from parents and other adults and to test their identities," in "Seeking Pleasure and Seeking Pain: Differences in Prohedonic and Contra-Hedonic Motivation From Adolescence to Old Age" in the journal Psychological Science.

The research method was very appropriate for the subjects: Participants carried mobile phones that prompted them some 54 times over three weeks to report how they felt and whether they desired to influence those feelings. Actually, the participant group included more than just adolescents — it comprised 378 people ranging in age from 14 to 86. Across the entire panel, what the researchers call contra-hedonic motivation was seen in 15% of the measurements, but among the adolescent cohort, it was seen in about one-fourth.

Teens and Young Adults : New Classes for Texas Teen Drivers
on 2010/4/24 15:40:00 (117 reads)
Teens and Young Adults

(Prudent Press Agency)--- As of March 1 of this year, Texas residents aged 18 to 24 must pass a special safety course before they can receive a driver's license. The mandatory six-hour course includes instruction on alcohol and drug awareness, Texas traffic laws and issues commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents. This new requirement aims to reduce the number of accidents among young drivers and to make the road safer for everyone.

Each year, thousands of young drivers die in automobile accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, automobile accidents account for nearly 33 percent of deaths among teenagers nationwide.

Unfortunately, Texas is not immune to the problems caused by young drivers. Nearly 500 teenagers are killed in automobile crashes each year in the state. 22 percent of all automobile crashes in Texas involve teenage drivers, as compared to 15 percent of all crashes nationwide. Overall, the total economic cost of automobile crashes with drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 approaches $3.5 billion in Texas alone.
