Science Technology and Innovation : Hand-Held Probe Measures Surface Temperature of Solids
|
| on 2010/8/12 23:00:00 (134 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- The HP 1000-SP probe features a pointed tip that allows for exact positioning of the sensor on the desired spot. This enhances measurement accuracy by eliminating any conduction heat transfer through the stem.
The HP 1000-SP is ideal for hard to reach locations in a variety of applications. According to Dr. Bahman Tavassoli, PhD Chief Technologies at Advanced Thermal Solutions. “We have applications where an automotive design engineer uses the probe to reach a hot surface on a motor for example”, said Dr. Tavassoli, “otherwise they would not be able understand the temperature characteristics of the surface and how it effects the overall thermal management design.” Dr. Tavassoli noted that any hard to reach space or surface in an enclosure or building would be good applications for the HP 1000-SP.

Science Technology and Innovation : EETN and Sharp Complete Successful Installation of TVA Region’s Largest Solar Power Plant; Dedication Ceremony Draws Business Leaders and Top Government Officials
|
| on 2010/8/12 6:00:00 (151 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Today utility executives joined with business leaders, and federal, state and local officials to inaugurate a new one megawatt (1 MW) solar power system, the largest in Tennessee and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Region. Now online, the system is comprised of 4,608 Sharp® ND-224UC1 solar modules made in the company’s Memphis plant and was developed, designed and constructed by Natural Energy Group in conjunction with Efficient Energy of Tennessee, LLC (EETN), its integrator arm based in Powell, TN. EETN will also maintain the facility.
“This one megawatt solar project exemplifies Tennessee's leadership in deploying solar power and developing clean energy technology solutions that will create good jobs and foster greater energy independence for our country," said Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. "I'm pleased to see continued investments like the one being celebrated in Knoxville today that are helping us create the clean energy economy of tomorrow."

Science Technology and Innovation : Visual Inspection Technology Automates High-Volume and High-Speed Bearing Assembly Inspections
|
| on 2010/8/10 8:00:00 (135 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Bearing assemblies are critical components of motors used in everything from devices smaller than miniature computer disk drives to machines larger than overhead construction cranes. The bearing manufacturing industry is extremely competitive. Mechanical ball feeders, tubes, pushers and dividers malfunction occasionally, and bearing raceway diameter and ball bearing sizes can be out of tolerance. In the bearing assembly manufacturing process, test spins and other mechanical checks will often pass even if a ball is missing. Human visual inspections are sometimes deployed, but these tests are not 100% repeatable and are prone to error. Customer satisfaction and retention are critical. If bearing assemblies are delivered incomplete so that they cannot bear the specified load, the results can be catastrophic.
PPT VISION specializes in high-volume, high-speed, precise visual inspection technology. Inspecting 100% of the bearing assemblies ensures that the correct number of bearings is present and evenly spaced around the raceways, and that the bearing cage is correctly attached, thus holding the assembly to its specifications. IMPACT cameras are available in a variety of camera resolutions and, coupled with a wide selection of lighting and optics, can be configured to inspect bearing assemblies in multiple designs and dimensions that are made of various materials.

Science Technology and Innovation : NSF Funds Building a Creativity Collective: Using the Crowd to Solve Societal Problems
|
| on 2010/7/30 17:40:00 (122 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Recently funded by the National Science Foundation, Jeffrey V. Nickerson, and Yasuaki Sakamoto of Stevens Institute of Technology are conducting research on how well design can be accomplished by a set of individuals quickly assembled online - a cyber crowd.
Over the next three years, their research project entitled, "Crowdsourcing Creativity: Experiments in Design," will build an idea ecology. Concepts will be treated like the chromosomes of a population that evolves in order to solve a problem. The crowd generates the ideas, selects the fittest, and combines them to create new ideas.

Science Technology and Innovation : Pentek's Programmable Multi-Frequency Clock Synthesizer Offers System Flexibility and Quick Delivery
|
| on 2010/7/29 15:00:00 (129 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Expanding on its popular multi-frequency clock synthesizer, Pentek, Inc. today announced the release of the user-configurable Model 7191 programmable clock synthesizer PMC module. Like its predecessor, the Model 7190, the new Model 7191 gives designers working with A/Ds and D/As a highly-precise clock source with the added flexibility of custom frequency generation under simple software control.
“Multichannel A/D and D/A systems for most radar and communication applications require synchronized sampling using precision clocks,” said Rodger Hosking, vice president of Pentek. “The Model 7191 is ideal when the desired clock frequency is not initially known, such as in laboratory systems or field-configurable deployed applications." Hosking added, "As a user programmable PMC module clock generator, the Model 7191 can replace bulky and expensive frequency synthesizers in systems needing several high quality clock signals, all phase locked to a system reference.”
