Retirement and Senior Citizens : Grandparents Increasing Serving As Primary Caregivers
on 2010/8/7 8:00:00 (92 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- With increasing frequency, grandparents nationwide are taking on traditional parenting responsibilities. Rather than providing an abundance of sweet treats and occasional babysitting services, these grandparents are regularly providing food, shelter, discipline and guidance.

According to the most recent census data available, there are more than 600,000 children in California living in grandparent-headed houses, representing nearly seven percent of all children in the state. Almost 300,000 grandparents in the state report that they are responsible for their grandchildren.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : Elder Abuse in New Jersey
on 2010/7/23 10:00:00 (134 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- When people consider elder abuse they often think of nameless strangers taking advantage of or physically harming or neglecting the elderly. However, it is becoming increasingly more common that the perpetrator of the abuse is a beloved family member of the abused. The reasons for taking advantage of or neglecting an elderly relative are many, from wanting cash and preserving an inheritance to needing money for bills and expenses. However, it is not always those with nefarious motives that end up abusing or neglecting the elderly. Gwen Orlowski, director of the New Jersey Division of Elder Advocacy, notes that even relatives "with the best intentions" may end up "mistreating their love ones unintentionally through frustration or exhaustion."

Orlowski also noted that only a few cases are reported to New Jersey law enforcement because "many incidents don't rise to the level of a crime." What can be done to protect the elderly from relatives who seek to take advantage of them or harm them? For one, New Jersey social service agencies can seek to have an offending relative's power of attorney or guardianship rights removed. In 2007, there were 2,249 cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation of the elderly. In 2008, the number climbed to 2,492. David Ricci, the coordinator of New Jersey Adult Protective Services, expects the number to grow even further when the total number of cases for 2009 is counted. While these numbers may include more than strictly abuse by a relative, elder abuse appears to be a growing issue in New Jersey.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : 2010 Cruise Sweepstakes will Reward a Deserving Family Caregiver
on 2010/7/8 12:40:00 (100 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- Jean Jenkins, a family caregiver who moved home to care for her 83-year-old ailing mother, after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina, knew first-hand how stressful caregiving could be when she entered the 2009 Caregiver Cruise Getaway Contest. At the time, Jean and her husband, Len, were helping prepare her mother’s seven different medications in an organizer every Sunday and making sure she took her meds every morning and at night. They were doing the cooking and cleaning, and maintaining the 35-year-old family home. Jenkins was making all of her mother’s doctor’s appointments and going with her to those check-ups.

A five-year study conducted for the Home Instead Senior Care® network or revealed that stress can have a devastating impact on family caregivers. Fifty-eight percent of caregivers say they are getting ill more frequently and that caregiving is taking a toll on their jobs. Furthermore, 81 percent say their loved ones’ needs are becoming overwhelming compared with 73 percent who thought so just four years earlier.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : Retire Early - Slow and Steady With a Side Business By Michael Hume
on 2010/7/4 16:20:00 (139 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- How's your retirement account these days? If you're like a lot of people in these tough times, you've lost a lot of your nest egg. Retiring early once seemed within your grasp; now, you're putting it off. One of the best ways to hedge your bets financially, and to put away enough money to seriously consider early retirement, has always been owning a business on the side. But if your nest egg is cracked and leaking - or, worse, if you're having trouble even making ends meet - where do you come up with the resources to start or buy a business? These days, that personal computer you have in your study at home could be the answer. It's changed everything. I guess the bad news is that a side business still requires time, energy, focus, and some bucks to invest. The good news for you, though, is that it's a lot easier than it was back when your old man was saving his money to put up a car wash in town. Your computer can get you into a legitimate online business without nearly as much investment of time, energy, or money. The key is to poke around in cyberspace long enough to find a legitimate business opportunity. You don't have to be a techno-geek to know how to surf the net, so you probably already have the technical know-how you need to hunt down a good online investment. Just don't be swayed by scam artists promising free secrets to effortless untold wealth. Like any legitimate business, your online venture will require some of your time, energy, and money. It's just your good fortune that you're going to need a lot less of these resources to be successful than Dad needed for that car wash. Just getting a toe in the water? Here are a few quick suggestions:

Online profile.
If you haven't done it already, join a social networking site. If you don't know which one is best, or how to get started, check with your older kids, or (well) almost anyone who hasn't been under a boulder for the last five years! If you already have a profile set up, think about adding a second site. Also, spend some time improving your profile with a better picture or more information. One of the first steps in becoming an internet entrepreneur has nothing to do with computer technology, but everything to do with building a trustworthy online presence.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : AssistedLivingFacilities.org Launches New Resource for Seniors Researching Housing Options
on 2010/6/28 19:00:00 (142 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- AssistedLivingFacilities.org is a new web resource launched to help senior citizens become more educated consumers as they make the decision to move from independent living into assisted living housing. During the past decade, assisted living has emerged as an ideal private pay senior housing option for seniors who are no longer able to live independently, but are not in need of 24-hour medical care, such as that which would be found in a nursing home. Because the transition into senior housing is one that brings along with it many questions and Assisted Living Facilities is a resource geared towards informing potential assisted living residents to alleviate concerns. This is where Assisted Living Facilities tries to educate and inform.

Using this information, a senior or family member can research all licensed assisted living communities in their area, and use the available information to help make a more informed decision in their senior care selection process. However, since assisted living is regulated at the state level, and not nationally, differing licensing requirements and different terminology exists between states throughout the country. Assisted Living Facilities strives to offer consumers as much unbiased information as possible relating to assisted living as it is defined by a specific state. The assisted living directory contains all the licensed facilities for each state, over 40,000 nationwide. In addition, the specific state requirements are explained in detail while the specific state contacts are also offered for further research. The website also operates a comprehensive senior care blog that offers helpful information and advice from authors experienced in the senior care industry.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : Senior Citizen Defrauded By Sweepstakes Scams Wins Big With The National Telemarketing Victim Call Center And Recovers $14,000.00
on 2010/6/19 14:40:00 (112 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- Roslyn Feldman, an 88-year-old woman from Brooklyn, NY, lost her life savings of $60,000 by playing fraudulent sweepstakes over a two year period. She believed she was a winner when she started receiving solicitations with phrasing like “You Have Won Money” and “You have already won, you need only to claim your check” printed in large colorful fonts, along with official looking seals of approval and facsimiles of checks she would receive. Mrs. Feldman lost her husband years earlier and wanted to prove to her son that she was financially independent, so when the sweepstakes came in the mail she thought her prayers had been answered. The catch: she needed to send in a processing fee which ranged from $5 to upwards of $50 per offer. What she did not see was the fine print, often on the back of the solicitation printed in small gray print declaring the offer was not a contest, only a solicitation to purchase an easy to read compendium that lists individual sweepstakes she could enter separately. Once she sent back the first processing fee, more offers started showing up in her mailbox and most days she received thirty different sweepstakes offers.

But the companies sending the sweepstakes use multiple names with the same Post Office Box, for example one company goes by twenty different names, so she was in fact sending money to the same place instead of the twenty individual contests she thought she was entering. Mrs. Feldman also received sweepstakes offers from non-profit organizations with deceptive phrasing where she thought she was required to give a gift in order to claim her prize. The words “no donation necessary” were written at the bottom of the page in italics, which italicized fonts are 18% harder to read for seniors rather than regular fonts.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : What Other Types of Abuse Are Happening in Our Nation's Nursing Homes?
on 2010/6/12 8:40:00 (159 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- On May 4, 2010, in Kingsport, Tenn., a licensed nurse was indicted by a grand jury and arrested for stealing patients' prescription narcotics from the nursing home where she was employed. The nurse, Summer Brook Lane, 33, worked briefly at the Holston Manor Nursing Home in Kingsport during the summer of 2009. Her crime was discovered when an officer in southwest Virginia made a traffic stop on her vehicle. The officer located narcotics in Lane's car that were not prescribed to her. The officer was able to trace the drugs to the nursing home where Lane was working in Kingsport.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations was notified and they assigned their Medicaid Fraud Control Unit to investigate the crime. The investigators found that Summer Lane had been taking the prescription narcotics that were intended to be distributed to patients at the Holston Manor Nursing Home. She was indicted by a grand jury for one count of abuse, neglect or exploitation of a dependent adult; obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, deceit or theft; and theft of property under $500.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : Use Your Motivation to Prepare For Your Retirement Work
on 2010/6/10 21:20:00 (71 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- If it looks like you'll need to work in retirement, at least for a while, choose an endeavor you enjoy to keep yourself motivated. This article gives you an approach to finding a job you want. Whether you're just beginning retirement or have a few years to go, you may know that you'll have to supplement your retirement income with some working income. And that means working part-time or full-time either for a company or yourself. If that's you, here's something to think about.

Most likely you've worked all your life for someone else. And there's a good chance you worked 'just for the money' to support the kids and family and to enjoy doing what you wanted to do in your free time. To you, working and enjoying were separate activities. But you ought to aim for enjoying your work to help make your retirement enjoyable. If you're still working at your career job, its income will support you while you develop what your 'retirement' job will be. If you're retired, you have some retirement income from Social Security, pension, and/or savings but, perhaps, not quite enough to spend for things to enjoy.

Retirement and Senior Citizens : June 15th is Elder Abuse Awareness Day
on 2010/6/10 20:50:00 (66 reads)
Retirement and Senior Citizens

(Prudent Press Agency) --- June 15th is the 5th annual Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Organizations and communities across the world will be engaging in activities which will raise awareness of this serious problem affecting elderly citizens worldwide. The law firm of Cullan & Cullan, M.D., J.D. encourages you to participate in local events to help promote elder abuse awareness in the Phoenix community. Elder Abuse Awareness Day was started in 2006. In its initial year, several hundred organizations and government entities participated in activities intended to help promote a better understanding of the issues surrounding elderly abuse in nursing homes around the world. Participation in the event has grown considerably each year.

Nursing home abuse and neglect impacts a significant number of elderly people across the world. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 25% of elderly adults are victims of abuse or neglect. Unfortunately, many of these incidents go unreported for a variety of reasons. "Elder abuse is a serious issue that does not receive the attention it deserves," says Gene Cullan, a Phoenix nursing home abuse attorney at the law firm of Cullan & Cullan, M.D., J.D. "Our law firm has witnessed the tragic consequences of nursing home abuse, and we are committed to protecting the rights of victims across Arizona. We are proud to participate in local Elder Abuse Awareness Day events on June 15, and we urge others in the area to join us."
