(Prudent Press Agency) --- The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina today announced the launch of Meet and Be Green, a new program that encourages guests and planners to make green choices for their meetings. In order to Meet and Be Green at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, planners and meeting attendees will pledge to take these ten steps to “go green” during their meeting:
· Recycle during the meeting · Use products with 100 percent recycled content · Print materials locally · Minimize shipping · Rather than setting materials at every seat, place meeting materials, such as handouts, notepads, pens, etc., in a central location so attendees can take as needed · Maintain room temperatures at an appropriate level · Eliminate disposable water bottles · Minimize use of other disposable products such as plates, cups, napkins and utensils · Select locally grown seasonal foods when planning the menu · Plan ahead for the meeting to make it easier and more economical to keep the meeting green.

(Prudent Press Agency) --- SET 2011, a Sustainable Environment Technologies Convention is scheduled to be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Thursday, March 31 through Saturday, April 2, 2011. SET 2010 was originally scheduled to be held on September 16-19, 2010. Due to overwhelming requests by potential sponsors and exhibitors, show management has decided to reschedule the event.
Brian Sherwin, Director of Sales and Sponsorships at SET 2011, clarifies reasoning behind postponing SET 2010, “By rescheduling the event (SET 2011) we are able to accommodate sponsors and exhibitors who originally would not have been able to participate on such short notice. Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Making electricity - How is electricity produced conventionally?
|
| on 2010/7/11 16:40:00 (122 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Conventionally, electricity is produced by moving colossal turbines. These turbines are moved with the help of various types of energy. Let's look at the most conventional ways of producing electrical energy:
• By using various fuels and water - Water is heated on a large scale in furnaces. The vapor generated helps move the blades of turbines. Fuels like petroleum, coal, and natural gas are used to heat large quantities of water. • By nuclear fission - Electricity is produced in nuclear reactors by making use of the heat generated in the chain reaction caused by nuclear fission. This heat boils water on a large scale converting it into vapor that turns the blades of the turbines. • By bio-waste - Electricity is now also being produced by burning bio-fuels instead of fossil fuels. Bio-fuels are obtained from biological waste, mainly from plants. Bio-fuels are considered safer than fossil fuels. • By hydro-power - Water is also a popular method of producing electricity. Rivers and large bodies of water are used to move huge turbines. Though this method of electricity production does not affect the air around us, it spoils the ecological balance inside the water bodies. • By wind - Electricity is produced by wind generators. These wind generators convert wind energy into mechanical energy which is further converted into electrical energy.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Help Save Sea Turtles and Kayak Loreto Baja this October
|
| on 2010/7/10 11:20:00 (136 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Idaho-based Sea Kayak Adventures, Inc. is offering an exciting all-inclusive eight-day trip package where participants can spend three days hands-on helping researchers monitor and tag endangered sea turtles at their nesting beach in Magdalena Bay, then three days paddling a sea kayak alongside dolphins and sea lions in the clear waters of Loreto Bay in the Sea of Cortez. The itinerary offers opportunities for novices to paddle and explore uninhabited desert islands by stable sea kayak, snorkel with colorful fish along isolated coves in clear turquoise waters and learn all about sea turtles. All activities are led by naturalist guides. “Grab a pair of waders and climb aboard the panga (skiff) to help monitor green turtle populations with local fishermen” company owner Terry Prichard states. “You will have a unique opportunity to help collect data and release turtles - maybe you'll even get to name one! In your down time, you can tour the dunes by foot and mangrove canals by panga to view migratory and local bird species, or visit with local fishermen to learn traditional fishing techniques”.
Sea Kayak Adventures is partnering with RED Sustainable Tourism to offer this unique conservation tour package along the Baja California peninsula, Mexico this October. For ecology minded travelers, this trip of a lifetime also has the positive impact of directly supporting community-based conservation of endangered green sea turtles. Recognized around the world as a model for community-based sea turtle conservation, the Grupo Tortuguero's Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtle Monitoring Program has helped to turn the tide for this once critically endangered species. Local communities seek alternatives to fishing as their sole source of income, and strive to train local community members in ecotourism and other low-impact cottage industries.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Powerful Environmental Groups Endorse Karen Montgomery’s State Senate Bid
|
| on 2010/6/23 13:20:00 (165 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- The 15,000-member Maryland Sierra Club last week gave its strong endorsement to Montgomery. “We appreciate the support you have shown on key environmental initiatives in the past,” said Sierra Club Chair David Hauck in his endorsement letter. The Maryland Sierra Club was a force behind the 1984 landmark legislation to protect the Chesapeake Bay, tighten laws concerning run-off, control sediment and manage fisheries and wildlife habitats. The Sierra Club’s nod to Montgomery comes on the heels of an early endorsement from the Maryland League of Conservation Voters. Montgomery is one of 16 Senate candidates endorsed by the League. “We are dedicated to passing strong environmental legislation, which is why who we elect matters,” said Cindy Schwartz, MLCV Executive Director. “We have a great opportunity to make a substantial difference by increasing the conservation majority in the Maryland General Assembly.”
“I am delighted that both organizations recognize my support of important legislation to preserve Maryland’s fragile natural resources,” said Montgomery. “Clearly defned, effective programs to protect our environment can also create jobs and new industries in Maryland.” As a member of the Governor’s Commission to Protect the Chesapeake Bay, Montgomery worked on common-sense environmental solutions to maintain critical natural resources including requiring cars to be more fuel-effcient, reducing the amount of nitrogen pollution entering the Bay and funding for state residents in sensitive areas to install environmentally friendly septic systems.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Landmark Legislation’s Anniversary Highlights Strong Need for Continued Efforts to Curb Illegal Logging
|
| on 2010/6/18 18:40:00 (156 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Marking the amended Lacey Act’s two-year anniversary, Senator Ron Wyden and Congressman Earl Blumenauer today praised the landmark legislation for protecting the environment, leveling the playing field for honest businesses and halting the egregious practice of illegal logging. The celebratory event, jointly hosted by WWF and the Environmental Investigative Agency (EIA), gathered a diverse group of experts from industry, government and the environmental community to share early successes, lessons learned and anticipated benefits of the Lacey Act.
“The important change we made to the Lacey Act is helping to end the trade of illegally harvested, and endangered wood and wood products,” said Congressman Blumenauer, who championed the bill along with Senator Ron Wyden in 2008. “By shining a light on global supply chains, we can prevent the destruction of some of the most valuable resources on our planet and protect the jobs of people who play by the rules.” The first law of its kind to prohibit the import, sale or trade of illegally-harvested wood and wood products, the Lacey Act has also given a boost to efforts in other countries. The European Union is already negotiating bilateral voluntary procurement agreements (VPAs), which focus on legal timber sourcing from some producing countries , and it is also in the final stages of approving a “due diligence” regulation to curb illegal timber entering the European market. Similarly, Australia is also considering legislation to prohibit trade in illegal wood.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Despite Oil Spill Disaster, Local Advocates Inspire Emerald Coast With Hope and Resolve
|
| on 2010/6/15 10:40:00 (406 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- As President Obama visits the Emerald Coast this week, long-time residents Theresa Chmiel of Pensacola and Michael Mendelssohn of Fort Walton Beach spend their time meeting with local business owners as they brace for the anticipated environmental and economic impact from the Deep Horizon oil spill. The main topic of conversation is how they will keep their local economy strong enough to withstand the long-term challenges. "Before we're even scraping the first tar off our flip flops, we need to be prepared," says Chmiel, an ex-nonprofit executive. "We have to stay ahead of the fear and uncertainty that is already creeping under our community's skin and remember everything we have been able to overcome in the past. There may not be a lot that I can do to keep the oil off our shores," she adds, "but, keeping our economy stable can start with me." Her message is simple - RelyLocal. RelyLocal began launching nationwide in January as a calculated response to the economic downturn across the country. The idea is simple - empower like-minded local business owners to stabilize the local economy while re-educating residents on the important role that local business has in the overall health of the community.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Cleaning Up Oil Spills - Just How is it Done?
|
| on 2010/6/12 19:40:00 (197 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Despite the recent headlines about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the good news is that the overall number of oil spills since 1960 has actually decreased due to a combination of tougher penalties and improved ship design. The operative word there being decreased but not eliminated. Just how bad is it? In the prior decade of the 1990s, an average of 150,000 tons of oil spilled into the world's waterways each and every year. Seeing the after-effects on the evening news of such disasters as the Exxon Valdez catastrophe in 1989 and the current mess we are experiencing in the Gulf, witnessing the countless birds and aquatic mammals suffering, covered in oil, made me wonder exactly how do experts clean up oil spills?
Time is the critical factor, along with waves, currents, and weather. If a crew can reach a spill within an hour or so, containment and skimming are employed. The oil will generally rise to the surface and then slowly spread out forming a thin sheen. If crews can get to work in time then they can employ long, buoyant booms with skirts that float on the water and contain the slick. The oil can then be skimmed and placed into containment tanks. This approach obviously requires calm seas in order to be successful.

|

(Prudent Press Agency) --- Anyone who wants to be more ecologically aware should know about environment products. If people know about these alternatives, their preferences would always be affected. If they know that there is a greener product that they can use in place of the usual products with all those harsh chemicals, they are left with no reason not to do so. Environment products can be made from purely recycled materials. There are also those that have some components of recyclables mixed with raw materials. There are ones that are biodegradable and non-toxic. It can also be 100% sustainable. Whatever the case is, it spells good news to the environment.
People can be environmentalists in their own little ways and choosing these green products is one of them. The range of products can be used in residential, commercial and even industrial settings. It is all a matter of taking time to find which manufacturers specialize in them. Faced with a wide variety of products, people can also get to know each of them more by reading the description. Oftentimes, the description explains in what way it is sustainable or beneficial to the environment. At the very least, the production methods reduce or completely eliminate the use of harmful ingredients. There are pieces of furniture that are made from recycled materials. It can be anything from beds, cabinets, desks and seating options.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Promoting a Community's Well-Being Through Lagoon Cleaning Services
|
| on 2010/6/12 11:40:00 (171 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- Belying its seemingly archaic name, a lagoon is actually a useful component of many communities' health, cleanliness and even livelihood. Lagoon cleaning services, therefore, remain an essential part of these communities' hygienic maintenance. A lagoon is generally described as a body of comparatively shallow salt or brackish water, separated from a deeper sea by a shallow barrier beach, sandbank, coral reef or any other similar feature. Originally coined in 1769 as an adaptation of the Venetian word laguna, the term has grown to encompass lakes and other isolated bodies of water.
These bodies of water may be particularly important to a community for different purposes. The most obvious would be for recreation, as many people take to the water to relax or engage in hobbies like fishing and powerboating. Some places, such as canneries and fishing villages, rely on lagoons for commercial purposes. Also, unbeknownst to many, lagoons can be used for wastewater treatment. Bodies of water dedicated to this task are designed as holding and/or treatment areas, often provided with artificial aeration, to promote the biological oxidation of wastewater. Knowing these things, the cleanliness of a lagoon becomes an important factor in the well-being of a community that relies on it for whatever purpose.
