(Prudent Press Agency) --- Chicago critic/columnist Jan Lisa Huttner recently earned her third Silver Feather Award for writing the most award-winning articles in the Illinois Woman’s Press Association’s annual Mate E. Palmer Communications Contest. This year, Huttner received three first-place awards, four second-place awards, two third-place awards and four honorable mentions for 13 features, interviews, reviews and speeches she wrote for Chicago YIVO, the College of Complexes, JUF News, and WomenArts, as well as her website (Films for Two: The Online Guide for Busy Couples) and her blog (The Hot Pink Pen). She garnered honors in numerous categories, including Writing for Print, Writing for the Web, Website Development and Public Presentations.
Two of her top three awards are for Jewish content. Her special feature on the most recent Chicago Festival of Israel Cinema (“Tzivi’s Guide to the 2009 CFIC”), which appeared in JUF News with additional content posted on Films for Two, won Best Writing for the Web—one of the contest’s most competitive categories. Her January and February columns for the JUF News also won first place in the Specialized Print Column category. These columns discussed the Chicago release of Edward Zwick’s film Defiance (about the three Bielski brothers who saved more than 1,000 Jews in Belarus between 1941 and 1945) and a visit from Erin Einhorn (author of The Pages in Between: A Holocaust Legacy of Two Families, One Home), as well as additional local happenings.

Literary & Little : With the Clock Ticking, “Last 72” Challenges the Public to Set Things Right Through the 'Last 72'Writing Contest.
|
| on 2010/6/17 14:40:00 (168 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency) --- What would you do if you were told you had only 72 hours to live? Not an easy question to answer, but that's exactly what participants in “Last 72” Writing Contest must do. Currently run and sponsored by the Emmy award-winning Everest Production Company and The Fountain: A Magazine of Scientific and Spiritual Thought, the competition invites writers to describe what it would be like if they suddenly had to live out three days as though they were their last. Last 72 rises from the premise that life is a gift, and that most people take for granted the amount of time they have on this earth. As The Fountain's editor Hakan Yesilova explains, “We all have things about our past or present that we'd like to set right. But what changes would we make today if we realized the opportunity called life were running out?”
In addition to having their work published and winning up to $5,000 in cash prizes, finalists will also have the chance to star in an upcoming television program called LAST 72. Part social experiment, part soul-stirring docu-series, the show will follow a new person each week as they race against the clock to live out what truly matters to them most. And to those who think death is too gloomy a topic for TV, think again. “This is about uplifting people. By acknowledging their own mortality, they'll be equipping themselves to appreciate just how precious life is," says Everest's Nasuhi Yurt, executive producer for the series.

Literary & Little : How to Save Over $5186 Each Year While Helping Millions of People in Poverty
|
| on 2010/5/27 7:00:00 (130 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency)--- A recent analysis of the most accurate and extensive study of U.S. adult literacy ever commissioned by the U.S. government proves that 48.7% of U.S. adults (more than 93 million of them) are functionally illiterate, defined as being unable to read and write well enough to hold an above-poverty-level-wage job. Equally shocking is the fact that 31.2% of these individual functional illiterates are in poverty. The percentage of all U.S. adults in poverty, using these figures, is $48.7 times 0.312, or 15.2%, which is in close agreement with total adult poverty estimated by other means. This recent analysis also shows that illiterates are more than twice as likely to be in poverty as a result of illiteracy as for all other causes combined. We do not see this level of illiteracy and its resulting poverty because illiterates are very good at hiding their illiteracy, because most families have more than one employed adult, and because most low-income families receive financial help from government agencies, family, friends, and charities.
After many years of research, Literacy Research Associates, Inc., a non-profit educational corporation, and NuEnglish, Inc., a non-profit educational corporation and a 509 (a)(2) private charity, have discovered and perfected a method of teaching reading which has been proven effective in more than 313 alphabetic languages. Although adopting this method of teaching reading would save at least $5186 per year for every U.S. adult—reader and non-reader alike, although this method has been advocated by numerous educational and linguistic scholars for more than two centuries, although 33 advanced as well as developing nations both smaller and larger than the U.S. have made the recommended changes, although several distinguished scholars have thoroughly debunked all reasonable objections to this change, although technological advances around the world have made English literacy more necessary than ever because English is the only “global” language (it is used more than any other to communicate with those who do not speak a person’s native language), and although present computer advances have made such a change easier than ever, because of the natural resistance to change and English-speaking countries’ pride in “our mother tongue,” it has never been tried in English.

Literary & Little : “I Got A Bailout!” is a “Pastor’s Comments” newspaper column which can be read online
|
| on 2010/5/23 17:00:00 (127 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency)--- In the “I Got A Bailout!” article Pastor Daniel E. Lundmark states, “Guess what? I got a bailout! I was hopelessly in debt and daily felt the despair of knowing it was utterly impossible to pay my debt, but then…I got a bailout!”. The “I Got A Bailout!” column is one of the weekly “Pastor’s Comments” newspaper columns written by Pastor Daniel E. Lundmark of Northampton Assembly of God, Northampton, PA. The newspaper column ministry started in 1975 in a Northampton newspaper and then moved on to other newspapers in or near the Lehigh Valley with circulations totaling over 150,000. Recently, the church increased that circulation by placing a “Pastor’s Comments” ad on The Morning Call online site which presently has 40,000 unique users per day. The weekly column is emailed free to all who request it using the pastor@naog.ws email address.
While Pastor Lundmark writes on various topics, the basic purpose of the column is to reach souls for Jesus Christ. The column is intentionally not on the religious page so that it might serve, in the pastor’s words, "As a fishing hook in the waters."
Pastor Lundmark wrote this “ I Got A Bailout!” column in January, 2009 when the government was providing bailouts for the auto industries, banks, etc. He realized it was on the minds of many people—especially those who were personally mired down in vast financial debts. He later stated, “What must it be like to be in debt with no hope of ever getting out of it and then to have someone pay off your debt for you? I can only imagine the joy that person would experience in being released from the financial burden and pressure of his debt! Yet, that scenario in one’s short lifetime would not even come close to comparing to the joy one experiences in being released from the bondage of sin which carried eternal ramifications!”

Literary & Little : The Best New York Times Business Columnist You've Never Heard Of
|
| on 2010/4/30 8:20:00 (210 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency)--- Sorry, Paul. Too bad, Tom. The most insightful pundit posting at today's New York Times hasn't won a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. He neither bloviates on global economic policy nor condescends about China's Green autocracy. He doesn't do Davos or snark. Nevertheless, his columns have quickly become "must reads" for entrepreneurs and executives who grasp that mathematics is now the "lingua franca" of serious business analysis. There is no better English-language explicator of complex quantitative concepts than Steven Strogatz. His work is a model for how mathematics needs to be popularized.
Pathological innumeracy is a plague afflicting the global business community (if you doubt that, I've got a couple of hundred million dollars of used sub-prime CDOs I'd be pleased to sell you). Strogatz's posts represent a public health prophylactic for the quantitatively impaired. Whether discussing limits or the role of "natural frequencies" in statistical inference, Strogatz is the rare math maven/technical tutor who makes you feel much smarter, not more confused, for reading him. Just as important, his columns facilitate the best of both educational worlds: frustrated mathphiles can use Strogatz's constructions to better communicate with numerically challenged colleagues; mathphobes discover that — surprise! — their minds are indeed capable of embracing concepts their sophomore and/or MBA "math camp" brains rejected. Win/win.
The ongoing mathematization of business — fueled in no small part by the computational infrastructures of networks and the digitalization of mobile devices — will accelerate and intensify the importance of getting the right numbers and getting the numbers right. The world would be a better, and richer, place if a few more board members at Citigroup, AIG, Bear Stearns, Lehman Bros., Royal Bank of Scotland and, yes, the New York Federal Reserve Bank had the probabilistic wit and presence to question the intrinsically flawed models upon which tens of billions of dollars were unwisely bet. Conversely, the Googles, Amazons, eBays and Apples, let alone the IBMs and and Vodaphones, literally could not function without the algorithmic infrastructures and applications governing their real-time operations. [I would have included Goldman Sachs...but that's not politically correct this week...] These companies know that quantitative relationships are as essential to their future innovations as the human relationships.

Literary & Little : How to Ask for a Reference Letter
|

How to Ask for a Reference Letter - PrudentPressAgency.com"> (Prudent Press Agency)--- In the 2009 film "Up in the Air," Natalie Keener decides she can no longer stomach being part of a corporate firing squad and quits her firm. Her mentor, played by George Clooney, behaves as the magnanimous gent we all know him to be: he writes a glowing reference letter on her behalf, addressed simply "to whom it may concern."
In the real world, getting a reference letter is far more difficult and often a source of much anxiety. Whom to ask, how to ask, what to say? But getting an outstanding reference letter is entirely within your control and easier than you think, even if you don't have a benevolent benefactor at your back.
Here are three tips to ensure your mentor, former boss, or academic counselor writes you a rave review: 1. Highlight their qualifications 2. Provide a template 3. Offer a "no questions asked" policy

Literary & Little : Strategy's Case against Specialization
|
| on 2010/4/29 19:40:00 (131 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency)--- The poet William DeWitt Snodgrass died last year, an event little remarked on in the strategy community. This is probably because in fifty years of writing and teaching, Snodgrass evinced absolutely no interest in business, or none that I can detect. No, his province was the human soul, particularly the tortured soul. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960 for his first book, Heart's Needle, a collection recounting the tugs, pulls, and devastation of finding himself estranged, through divorce, from his young daughter.
The last line of Snodgrass's best-known poem does, however, contain a reminder useful for strategists. In the seasonally appropriate "April Inventory," the poet trolls through a list of all he hasn't done in the preceding year (anything that would burnish his scholarly credentials or win academic preferment). And what he has done — ease an old man's dying, teach a girl a song of Mahler's. (It's a terrific poem, at once elegiac, mysterious, and in spots hilarious.) At the end, the poet concludes
There is a loveliness exists Preserves us, not for specialists. The last three words came back to me when I read a response from Carla Zilka to an interview Sarah Cliffe did with me for HBR.org. Having hired and fired the big strategy houses when she worked for GE, Zilka writes, she now sees the benefit of more specialized consultants. (Indeed, her website indicates that she has founded just such an outfit.)

Literary & Little : How to Ask for a Reference Letter, Part II: The Template
|
| on 2010/4/28 21:40:00 (640 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency)--- Last week, I wrote a post on How to Ask for a Reference Letter which gave three steps for asking for (and getting!) a great letter of recommendation. The second, and arguably most important step, is to provide a template for your reviewer of what you'd like included in the letter.
Recently, an elementary school teacher told me that her former principal had failed to respond to her request for a letter of recommendation. I asked if she had included a template for her principal of what to say, to which she replied no, and then admitted sheepishly, "Honestly, I wouldn't have any idea how to write the letter myself." At the risk of stating the obvious, if you can't imagine writing the letter, how do you think someone else is going to write it for you?
When you are asking for a recommendation, take the time to create a template for the person writing the recommendation. This can be a draft of the letter itself or a simply a roadmap: a set of points that provides them with an outline as well as the context and content for their note.
