Computers and Software : GoldKey Secure Storage in the Cloud
on 2010/4/8 11:40:00 (122 reads)
Computers and Software

(Prudent Press Agency)--- At the recent RSA Conference in San Francisco, CA, GoldKey Security Corporation announced the launch of GoldKey Secure Storage, a new security technology targeting cloud computing installations. The technology provides enterprise-class encryption for user data stored in the cloud in special secure storage units called KryptoVaults®. Early evaluators consider the new solution to be more secure and much easier to set up and operate than competing technologies.

“One big problem with encryption in the enterprise has been the complexity it imposes on the user experience,” said Roger E. Billings, CEO of GoldKey. “The GoldKey Secure Storage system brings ease of use, manageability and accountability to multi-factor authentication and strong AES encryption – perfect for cloud and utility computing environments, with all their efficiencies and their risks. I believe many users will migrate to GoldKey storage just for the convenience and ease of use.”

“Our clients are anxious to exploit the promise of cloud computing services,” said Daryl C. Plummer, Managing Vice President of Gartner. “The two pieces of the cloud puzzle that don’t quite fit together are storage and security. A practical system for securing cloud-based storage will be of great interest to IT managers everywhere.”

General Interest : Christian words associated with prejudice in experiment
on 2010/4/8 11:30:00 (133 reads)
General Interest

(Prudent Press Agency)--- In a recent study conducted by Baylor University it was found that those who are given Christian religious words in writing or conversation are more likely to express racial prejudice and negative views toward African Americans.

Dr. Wade Rowatt, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor who led the study, looked at the results of the study which appeared in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science and said, "It could be that priming religious words activates cognitive representation of things like right-wing authoritism and a Protestant work ethic."

The definition of priming is when an earlier stimulus affects a behavior or response to a later stimulus. For example, if given a list of words about furniture without the word table, given the first few letters, tab, would finish with the word table as opposed to those who aren't given a word table.

Legal : Bikini atoll residents denied compensation for nuclear tests
on 2010/4/8 11:10:00 (128 reads)
Legal

(Prudent Press Agency)--- During the Cold War the Marshall Island atolls of Bikini and Enewetak were used for multiple nuclear tests.

The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled that compensation for resultant illnesses and birth defects will not be forthcoming.

In 1984 the Marshall Islands were granted independence. The "Compact of Free Association with the U.S." had the U.S. assume "responsibility for the nuclear damage caused by the equivalent of 1.6 Hiroshima atomic bombs a day for 12 years."

However, in a ruling that the Honolulu Star Bulletin described as "shameful," the U.S. government has evaded the responsibility to actually pay out any damages or compensation.

In 1986, Congress established a $150 million trust fund to provide compensation to former residents of Enewetak and Bikini.

In a 2001 settlement, the federal government agreed to pay the groups much more, the people of Enewetak were to receive $385 million and the people of Bikini $563 million.

on 2010/4/8 10:50:00 (150 reads)
Security, Detective & Crime

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Short shorts at a family dinner on Easter Sunday led to murder in Columbus, Ohio earlier this week. Tuesday morning the host was charged with shooting and killing her younger second cousin.
Columbus, United States - Evelyn Burgess' 19-year-old second cousin, Danielle Pickens, wore a scanty outfit to her Easter dinner party on Sunday, April 4, 2010. The resultant fracas did not end until Pickens was dead:

Burgess got mad when her husband took notice of the T-shirt and jean shorts that Danielle Pickens was wearing. Burgess and Danielle Pickens fought before Pickens walked outside and got into a car in front of the Linden-area house. Burgess followed, pointed a handgun at her 19-year-old second cousin and shot her in the head, according to police.

Literary & Little : Opinion: Is 'Lady Gay Gay' T-shirt protected by the First Amendment?
on 2010/4/8 10:30:00 (160 reads)
Literary & Little

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Do we really live in the "land of the free?" Are we really free to practice any religion, or be outward with our sexuality? One school in rural Tennessee may not agree with the latter.

Just about anything can printed on a T-shirt, but a certain slogan has sparked a fight over free speech at a high school in Tennessee. As reported earlier today on Digital Journal, an "I ♥ Lady Gay Gay" T-shirt sparked controversy when 15-year-old Cole Goforth wore the shirt to school on Monday.

Should students be allowed to wear whatever they want on their shirts, as long as no one is offended? But, then again, what constitutes being offended?

Automotive : Carbon tax aggressive approach to vehicle emissions
on 2010/4/8 10:10:00 (151 reads)
Automotive

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Vehicle manufacturers producing for the Canadian market have been given aggressive new guidelines for emission controls and they are accompanied by a big stick. If they do not meet the standards voluntarily they may be confronted with a carbon tax.

In December, 2009 Environment Canada unveiled the new guidelines. They call for a 20 per cent reduction in tailpipe emissions by 2011 (compared to 2008) and a 25 per cent reduction by 2016. At the time Environment Canada announced the standards a media release stated, ``The proposed standards would require substantial environmental improvements from new vehicles and would put Canadian Green House Gas [GHG] emission standards at par with U.S. national standards and, by 2016, with the California standards,''
Announcing the possibility of a carbon tax if the emission standards were not met, Environment Minister Jim Prentice went even further last week:

Since last May, we've been working with the United States to put in place tough North American standards for regulating greenhouse gas emissions from new vehicles. We are pleased to be taking this step to further harmonize our climate change action with the Obama administration - a step that will protect our environment and ensure a level playing field for the automotive industry.

Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation : Predictions for 2010 seal hunt: Few hunters, record low takes
on 2010/4/8 9:30:00 (156 reads)
Environment, Forestry, Nature and Conservation

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Just as the Canadian seal hunt is about to get underway on April 8 in Newfoundland, Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans is being criticized for allowing the hunt to proceed.

St. John's, NL - The issue, according to conservationists, is the lack of sea ice and the thousands of dead dying seal pups. But ask the sealers what the issue is, and they'll tell you it's depressed prices, a lack of buyers for the furs, and left-over stock from previous years that is the issue. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, however, has not only allowed the hunt to proceed, fueling the anger of conservationists, the DFO has allowed sealers to take a higher catch this year, puzzling hunters. Newfoundland sealing spokesman Frank Pinhorn said it was likely less hunters would participate this year.

While much of Canada's problem in finding markets for seal products is a result of Europe's ban of Canadian seal products, PInhorn blamed the recession, pointing out that markets for lobster and shrimp have gone soft. Canadian Inuit have filed cases against the ban in Europe, saying that their livelihoods are endangered by the ban, even though the EU has said it will support indigenous peoples. Canada has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization. Canada was wooing China in an attempt to open the trade doors a little wider for Canadian seal products, and while the DFO said China was receptive, China is not following through.

Politics & World Affairs : Black Tea Party members face heat
on 2010/4/8 9:10:00 (270 reads)
Politics & World Affairs

(Prudent Press Agency)--- Many black political activists are facing fire because they are going against what other blacks feel is the norm and that is that they should be Democrats and not Republicans.

Black Republicans have been called Uncle Toms, Oreos and worst just because they are Republicans. It is assumed that if you are a black person you are supposed to be a member of the Democratic party.

According to Timothy F. Johnson, chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, a group of black conservatives who support free market principles and limited government, "Black Republicans find themselves always having to prove who they are.

Because the assumption is the Republican Party is for whites and the Democratic Party is for blacks."
Black conservatives, like Johnson, are finding themselves drawn to the Tea Party movement because of its basic principles with conservative spending, limited government, and less taxes. These conservatives are now saying that they because they are black and tea partyers are primarily white shouldn't matter at all.
